When you think of California, you may envision beautiful blue skies, expansive oceans, pristine white sand, and a laid-back atmosphere with people enjoying homegrown marijuana. However, let me provide you with a different perspective, shattering this idyllic image.
In September 2022, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed a bill aiming to make the state a “sanctuary” for parents moving from states that prohibit surgery and hormonal intervention on transgender minors. Some states have introduced legislation making it a felony for medical professionals to perform such interventions on individuals under the age of 19, while others, like California, permit it. Essentially, those states in favor of these interventions support subjecting young individuals, who may be dealing with psychological and social challenges related to gender dysphoria, to surgical procedures.
If that wasn’t concerning enough, California’s proposed Assembly Bill 957 takes it a step further by labeling parents who refuse to “affirm” their child’s claimed gender identity as “abusive.” Consequently, parents who don’t conform to this fantasy could risk losing custody of their children. Instead of providing these struggling kids with appropriate psychological support through qualified psychologists or counselors, parents may feel compelled to take them to gender clinics and start them on puberty blockers.
Now, imagine you have an eight-year-old son who persistently insists that he is a girl. This fixation may be due to various reasons such as being on the autism spectrum, experiencing trauma at school unbeknownst to you, or going through a mental health crisis. Due to fear of the law, you might find yourself compelled to call him “her” and use the chosen girl’s name.
Consequently, your son would attend school dressed as a girl, and because of California’s self-identification laws, teachers would naturally affirm his claimed gender identity. A recent case in California highlighted a mother’s opposition to a bill as she stated that her daughter was a victim of gender ideology.
Abigail Martinez bravely spoke out against the Child Protective Services (CPS) after they removed her daughter, Yaeli, from her home, allowing her to transition into a man. Tragically, Yaeli took her own life three years later at the age of 19. Martinez blamed gender ideology for her daughter’s death.
During the hearing, Martinez revealed that CPS took her daughter when she was 16 years old. The school counselor, along with an LGBTQ group and another transgender-identified girl, influenced Yaeli’s decision to question her sexuality and gender. Martinez emphasized that her daughter was taken away because she refused to affirm her trans identity, resulting in the loss of her daughter over a name and pronouns.
Martinez expressed that the school failed to inform her about her daughter’s desire to transition and, when she expressed concerns, the school counselor recommended that Yaeli would be better off outside of her parents’ home. Martinez further explained that her daughter had mental health issues and was not a boy trapped in a girl’s body. Nevertheless, despite the challenges, she made efforts to support her daughter, using the chosen names Jay and Andrew and attempting to be there for her.
CPS placed Yaeli in a group home, allowing her mother to visit for only one hour per week. Martinez struggled tirelessly to regain custody of her daughter but was unsuccessful. She now questions why so many transgender adolescents in the state end up in foster care. Martinez firmly believes that parents are given only one option to treat their distressed child: affirming drugs and the removal of their healthy body parts, or face losing their child. In the end, the abuse claim against Martinez was dropped, but the damage had already been done. Her daughter suffered immense mental and physical pain, leading her to take her own life.
Recent research published in the Daily Wire revealed a landmark Danish study indicating significantly higher suicide rates and psychiatric conditions among transgender individuals. The study analyzed nearly seven million people in Denmark, including around 3,800 transgender individuals, over the past four decades. It discovered that trans-identifying people had suicide death rates 3.5 times higher and suicide attempt rates 7.7 times higher than those who did not identify as transgender. Additionally, transgender individuals tended to have shorter lifespans, regardless of the cause of death.
These alarming statistics, combined with personal stories like Abigail Martinez’s, shed light on the potentially devastating consequences of embracing a gender ideology that denies biological realities. It is crucial to recognize that this ideology contradicts the principles of reason, rationality, and scientific evidence that have propelled societal progress since the Enlightenment era.
During the Enlightenment, humanity transitioned from an era of superstition, ignorance, and violence to one that championed science, reason, and evidence-based thinking. These principles paved the way for advancements in technology, human rights, and democratic governance. However, the recent surge of gender ideology threatens to undermine the very foundations that have brought societal flourishing and progress.
Gender ideology dismisses the significance of biological sex by substituting it with the concept of gender, which revolves around how an individual feels rather than their biological reality. This allows for a seemingly arbitrary change in gender identity, irrespective of biological sex or genitalia. For instance, we witnessed an absurd case in Scotland where a biological man suddenly decided he was a biological woman. As a result, this individual, who was a convicted male rapist, was placed in a female prison alongside female inmates because of his self-proclaimed “sexual orientation” as a female.
This blatant disregard for truth, reason, and objective reality poses a direct threat to the principles that have guided societal progress. The progressive ideology, purportedly based on inclusivity and tolerance, ironically rejects the very foundations that have brought about advancements in science, reason, and human rights. It is essential to critically evaluate these ideologies to ensure that we do not sacrifice truth and rationality at the expense of societal well-being and progress.
